Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel is used across a wide range of engineering applications and this has led to the development of a wide range of stainless steels.  There are 4 main groups of stainless steel - Austenic, Ferritic, Martensitic and Duplex stainless steels.

Austentic stainless steels are the most important and widely used group of stainless steels and grades AISI 304 (EN 1.4301) and AISI 316 (EN 1.4401) and AISI 316L (EN 1.4404) stainless steel lie within this range.  These materials are ideal for use in the manufacturing of floor drains, street furniture, clean room applications and all purpose machines.

These materials are used in Kent Stainless processes and are ideal for applications in the food processing, brewing, pharmaceutical and chemical industries.  They provide a high resistance to corrosion attack and are readily formed and fabricated.  Grade 304 stainless steels contain around 0.8% chromium and 8% nickel and provides excellent corrosion resiostance.

For applications where superior corrision resistance properties are required particularly chlorides are involved, 316 grade stainless steels are used and contain around 18% chromium, 10% nickel and 3% molybdenum.  Unlike all other grades of stainless steels, austentic grades are non-magnetic and as a consequence magnetic particles are not attached to the surface, avoiding contamination.

For Kent Stainless, the principal properties of stainless steel may be summarised as follows:

  • Excellent corrosion resistant in highly aggressive enviorments
  • Excellent hygenic and clean ability surfaces
  • Astetically attractive surface finish
  • Good forming and fabrication characterics
  • Good resistance to wear and abrasion
  • Excellent strength and resistance to oxidation at high temperatures

All of which make stainless steels an obvious first choice for our product range
